About AMGDB

The Association of Medical and Graduate Departments of Biochemistry (AMGDB), founded in 1969, represents Departments of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology at graduate and medical schools in North America, including the 50 United States and Puerto Rico, Canada, Mexico and the Caribbean.

The AMGDB is concerned with issues related to fundamental and biomedical science, health research, science policy and education. We work with and support the teaching mission of the Association of Biochemistry Educators. Through its web site, AMGDB serves as a conduit between departments and graduate student and postdoctoral applicants. It also notifies young scientists about openings for faculty positions in biochemistry departments throughout North America. It maintains a examination question bank, discussion board and listing of biochemistry departments and chairs.

In addition, the AMGDB representatives speak on issues related to biomedical science and education with key members of the House and Senate at the National Caucus of Basic Biomedical Science Chairs, emphasizing the need to maintain our nation's leadership in scientific discovery and improvements in the quality of life.

Member Testimonials about the Annual AMGDB Meeting

"I have found the discussions to be useful in the information that I can bring back regarding teaching modalities, tenure, salaries, start-up funds and a variety of other topics. I have made some good friends, valuable research contacts and several collaborations from these meetings."

"There is value in the interchange with fellow Chairs, meeting new Chairs, discussing important issues that we are all dealing with in our home institutions, and seeing how some have met challenges most of us encounter."

"The contacts I've made here have proved extremely valuable and I concur that they would not have been cemented nearly so well in a more conventional setting. Being locked up with all of you non-stop playing…and discussing scientific and other issues at formal sit-down meetings has allowed me to get to know surprisingly many of my colleagues on a very personal, unpretentious level, which has already led to collaborations on regional projects and solutions for potentially prickly personnel and political issues that some of them had already encountered in their own jobs. This process has made me much better at my job. Thank you! I hope that we don't lose sight of the value of joyfully and respectfully convening with others with similar values, problems and goals in an environment that stimulates close, personal interactions."

"…a great meeting where some of the most important networking and information-exchange takes place outside of the formal meeting…a pleasant and stimulating winter-break in a warm climate...."
