Assistant Professor Biochemistry and Molecular Biology

09-Dec-2022 10:37 AM | Karen Gottlieb (Administrator)

Position Description: The Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology (BMB) at Oklahoma State University (OSU) invites applications for a full-time, 11-month, tenure-track teaching (80%) and extension (20%) position at the rank of Assistant Professor in the field of Biochemistry, Molecular Biology, and youth STEM education.

The BMB department is located within the Noble Research Center and is composed of a diverse faculty with expertise in a variety of disciplines. The Department presently employs 22 faculty and 6 support staff and houses OSU’s Proteomics and Genomics Core Facilities.  The BMB Department has an undergraduate program (~150 majors) that prepares students for postgraduate professional and graduate programs. In addition, the Department has exceptional M.S. and Ph.D. programs. Across the Division of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources and the OSU campus, there are a number of faculty and extension specialists working on STEM education and educational research programs.

Exemplary teaching and the ability to cover lower and upper-division BMB courses is a primary responsibility of the incumbent. The successful candidate is also expected to champion the use of modern pedagogical tools in the department and contribute to online course delivery in BMB. In addition, this individual will serve as a liaison between the BMB department and the Oklahoma 4-H Youth Development unit. In this latter role, the candidate will work with both state extension specialists and county educators to develop and deliver youth development programs on BMB-related topics that include a standards-based curriculum and opportunities for youth to demonstrate mastery through hands-on engagement.

The individual hired should also be prepared to work alone and in collaboration to apply for competitive grants aimed at improving science education programs and/or youth STEM program development. The candidate will also be expected to act as a faculty mentor and/or advisor for undergraduate majors and educational research students.

Qualifications: Ph.D. degree in life sciences education, biochemistry, molecular biology, or a related discipline. Postdoctoral training while not required, is a plus for potential candidates, and demonstration of postdoctoral research completed within the broad discipline of science education is especially sought after. Previous science teaching experience at a university or community college and involvement with youth STEM education is highly desirable.

Employment:
This 11-month tenure track faculty position will be filled by August 10, 2023, or as soon thereafter as an acceptable applicant is available.  Salary and start-up will be commensurate with qualifications.

Application Procedures:
Formal applications are via electronic submission at https://jobs.okstate.edu search for req12689.

To apply, candidates should submit: 1) a cover letter, and documents describing 2) a teaching statement and interests, 3) a youth STEM program development statement and interests, 4) educational grant ideas, 5) full curriculum vitae, and 6) contact information for 3 references.

While applications will be accepted until a successful candidate has been identified, interested parties are encouraged to submit their information by January 15, 2022, to receive optimal consideration.
